A little about me.
I've had the good fortune of wandering through a few different worlds. My background is in physics. I did research in clinical pharmacology, in an area called pharmacokinetics (we can talk about that another time). And right now I'm partway through a computer science degree, because I never really stopped being a student myself.
But the one thread running through all of it has been teaching. I've been working in STEM education since I left high school many, many moons ago — 2004, if you want the receipts. The cape I've worn has changed shape over the years. I've been the tutor patiently walking a kid through math and physics. I've stood with a group of scientists in the Next Generation Scientists group at the African Institute of Biomedical Sciences, more or less preaching the gospel of how exciting a life in science can be. And after immigrating to Canada, one of my first roles was at the STEM Learning Lab, where I designed and ran everything from summer camps to in-school programs — including facilitating at two of the Calgary Campus Open Minds schools: the Tinker School and the Social Enterprise School.
Outside of all that, I love the arts, I love making things, and yes — I'll own it — I'm a decent salesperson too.
Nothing lights me up more than the moment a child finally gets it.
If you've read this far, I hope you can feel the thing underneath all of it: I believe in the power of learning, and I want to put it in the hands of the next generation. Work is just different when you love it, and teaching is work I love. That's the energy I bring to my students.
I see life as an adventure, and I think that when you're handed the right tools for it, you're far more likely to enjoy every step. That doesn't mean I make things easy — my programs aren't easy. But they're not needlessly hard either. I aim for the Goldilocks middle: just right.
Bitsized is the first project I've put my own name on and sent out into the world. But as you can probably tell, I've been teaching and writing learning plans for a very long time. Your child will be in good hands.
